A plain-language guide to the Incoterms that define who pays for what in international shipping.

What Are Incoterms

Incoterms are standardized trade terms that define the responsibilities of buyers and sellers for delivery, risk, and cost in a shipment.

EXW and FOB

Ex Works means you handle almost everything from the supplier door. Free On Board means the supplier delivers goods onto the vessel, then responsibility passes to you.

CIF and DDP

Cost, Insurance and Freight includes shipping and insurance to the destination port. Delivered Duty Paid means the seller handles everything including duties, the most hands-off option for the buyer.

Choosing the Right Term

The right Incoterm depends on how much of the process you want to control. When in doubt, ask your logistics partner to explain the trade-offs.
